Abstract The neutral layer offset was discussed in order to improve the precision of straightening force. After analyzing the 3-D elastic-plastic deformation of straightening piece, the neutral layer offset theory was presented. The dynamic change rule of neutral layer offset was obtained by numerical simulation and experiment which illustrated that neutral layer offset was an important factor to influence the straightening precise and provided the theory base and data to establish more precise straightening force model.
